An area is a geographical division of Alcoholics Anonymous. There are 93 Delegate Areas in the US & Canada. One General Service Conference Delegate comes from each Area. In the state of Maine, there is only one Delegate Area, Area 28. 

The Area 28 Committee consists of nine Area Officers, 14 Committee Chairs, and 26 District Committee Members (DCM) from the 26 geographically defined districts in Area 28. The Area Committee is responsible for the health of the conference structure and thus for growth and harmony in the A.A. fellowship.

An Area 28 Assembly is a meeting of Group Service Representatives (GSR) and the Area Committee. There are two Area 28 Assemblies per year. Voting members of the Assembly include all GSR’s (or their alternates), the Delegate and all members of the Area Committee. During the Area Assembly there are reports from Area Officers, Committees Chairs, and DCMs. The Assembly also takes action on proposals presented at the Area Assembly from AA members. The Area Assembly is an integral part of the Conference structure — the democratic voice of the members expressing themselves. Assemblies are the responsibility of the Area Committee and are conducted by our Area Chair. Districts within Area 28 will bid to host each Area Assembly, so the Assembly moves around the Area to encourage participation among all districts.

Area 28 is part of the Northeast Region of Alcoholics Anonymous, along with Areas from New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. The Northeast Region meets annually at the Northeast Region of Alcoholics Anonymous Service Assembly (NERAASA). The purpose of NERAASA is for GSRs, DCMs, Area Committee Members and Intergroup and Central Office Representatives of the Northeast Region to discuss General Service Conference related issues and concerns affecting AA as a whole, as well as pertinent aspects of recovery, unity and service common to the Areas of the Northeast Region. More information can be found at the NERAASA Website.
